It can also cause water retention problems, which may lead to swelling. These serious side effects are only associated with taking high doses of licorice. There are some side effects that come with smaller dosages too. Some people experience muscle pain and numbness in their legs and arms. You should consult your doctor if you are taking licorice supplements and are experiencing any of the side effects.
