After four weeks, the blood pressure had dropped for those taking 150mg/day and 300mg/day of the grape seed extract. There were no blood pressure changes in the group given a placebo.
  • Circulation: The active ingredient in grape seeds is oligomeric proanthocyanidins or OPCs. Procyanidins, specifically, seems to have an effect on blood circulation, and grape seed extract contains up to 78% by weight of procyanidins. When grape seed extract was given to participants, a decrease in blood clotting was observed.
  • Anti-oxidation: Although we need oxygen to live, oxygen does contribute to the damage of our cells. This process of continual damage is known as oxidation. An antioxidant slows down the process of oxidation or removes the oxidizing agents, altogether. Grape seed extract seems to offer anti-oxidation benefits in a study with 20 volunteers. Five volunteers received a placebo daily and 15 volunteers received 300mg/day of grape seed extract. After five days, anti-oxidation results were seen with those who were given the grape seed extract.
  • Chloasma: Chloasma is a skin condition where brown patches appear on the face. In a study conducted on 12 women, grape seed extract reduced the brown patches on their skin. The grape seed extract was given to the women over a period of six months. After the six-month period, the grape seed extract seemed to improve or slightly improve their chloasma.
  • Swelling due to injury: The proanthocyanidin in grape seed extract may also help with swelling. In a study conducted on Japanese women, the proanthocyanidin helped reduce leg swelling after long periods of sitting. The study showed that there was a decrease in leg volume and a decrease in leg fluid. There was also an increase in blood flow circulation.

Precautions

There are a few side effects associated with taking grape seed extract supplements. Side effects can include dizziness, nausea, itchy scalp, and headaches.
