What is Apple Cider Vinegar?
Apple cider vinegar is a type of vinegar that is made solely from apples. It can be found in grocery stores as it is a common flavoring agent in cooking, baking, and in salads. Unlike regular vinegar which is clear, apple cider vinegar is usually orange, red and/or dark red.
It is also a type of dietary supplement that can be found in grocery stores, pharmacies, vitamin shops, and health-based stores. These supplements can be found in tablet or gel capsule form, though typically they are sold as tablets.
Apple cider vinegar is made from fermenting crushed apples with bacteria and yeast. During the initial fermentation process, the substance is fermented into alcohol. It is then fermented a second time with acetic acid forming bacteria, which turns it into a vinegar.
After crushing apples, basically turning it into apple juice, yeast is added which then ferments (the fruit sugars getting turned into alcohol), which causes the ‘juice’ to become sour and smell strong. Then it becomes apple cider vinegar. That is how pure, liquid apple cider vinegar is made.
However, in the US, labs have found that the number of ingredients in the apple cider vinegar tablets (eg. supplements) do not match the ingredients in pure apple cider vinegar. Since there are no laws stating that the supplements must contain apple cider vinegar, it is unclear if they do in fact contain some or any amount of pure apple cider vinegar. Because of this, it is still unclear exactly how the supplements have been and are made.
Apple cider vinegar contains an abundance of different minerals and vitamins. These include
- vitamin C
- vitamin E
- vitamin A
- vitamin B1
- vitamin B2
- vitamin B6
- And vitamin P
How it is Used
Apple cider vinegar is commonly used in many ways with food. Due to it being a calorie-free flavoring agent, it is quite popular among chefs and bakers.
Many people use apple cider vinegar as a home remedy for a wide variety of conditions. These can include, but are not limited to:
- Improving skin health
- Lower high blood pressure
- Alleviate shingles symptoms
- Remove and reduce dandruff
- Alleviate vaginal infections and vaginitis
There is not enough scientific evidence to suggest that it can aid in relieving or correcting the condition or its symptoms. However, recent studies have shown that the acetic acid inside of apple cider vinegar can help control weight when taking a small amount of it every day for a few weeks, and the acetic acid can also decrease and regulate blood glucose levels. Although, this can also have negative consequences, both slight and significant.
Side effects: Because it contains a large amount of acid, taking apple cider vinegar as a medicine can damage teeth and the enamel, cause esophageal (throat) injuries, unsettle the stomach. It can also lower potassium levels, which in turn can affect the muscles and nerves and additional reports from diabetic patients show that digestive problems can appear and even become worse with large doses. In women with osteoporosis, regular use can affect bone density, typically reducing it. Increasing side effects of medications have also been known to occur.
Taking with medications: Do not take apple cider vinegar or apple cider vinegar supplements without consulting a doctor first. Taking large amounts of apple cider vinegar can interact with several different medications negatively. These include Digoxin (Lanoxin), Insulin, and water pills.
Digoxin (Lanoxin), like all medication, has side effects and when taken with large amounts of apple cider vinegar, these side effects can increase.
As mentioned earlier, apple cider vinegar can lower potassium levels in the body, especially in large amounts or over a long period of time. This also happens when a person is taking Insulin. Therefore, if someone takes both apple cider vinegar and Insulin together, the potassium levels could drop far too low for what they are supposed to be.
Water pills (Diuretic drugs) are a wide variety of medications that can lower potassium levels. chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, HydroDiuril, Microzide), and several different others are all water pills. Taking large amounts of apple cider vinegar with water pills has a reaction much like that of Insulin: the potassium levels get far too low.
Known reactions: A person who took 250 mL of apple cider vinegar every day for six years was found to have developed osteoporosis, also known as ‘weak bones’, as well as low potassium levels. Also, a woman was reported to have pain and tenderness in her voice box as well as difficulty swallowing for 6 months after she had an apple cider vinegar supplement tablet lodged in her throat for 30 minutes. The cause of this was because of the high acid content the tablet contained.
Recommendations: Doctors do not suggest those who are pregnant or breastfeeding to take apple cider vinegar as a medication, even though there is not enough knowledge about taking the product. The same is said for those who have Diabetes. This is because it may alter your blood sugar levels and possible your insulin levels. Before intending to take apple cider vinegar as a medicine, talk with a medical professional.
While taking apple cider vinegar for medicinal purposes, or taking apple cider vinegar supplements, always follow the exact directions, read any and all product labels, and ensure that the appropriate dosage is not being exceeded. Before taking any dose, it is usually recommended to take pure apple cider vinegar with a few tablespoons of water or tea to avoid any reactions on the throat. Taking the tablet supplements should be done with a glass of water.
It is important when using apple cider vinegar to dilute it in water. This is because it is highly acidic and can be corrosive if undiluted. If taken repeatedly undiluted it can erode the lining of the esophagus and stomach.
Apple cider vinegar may react with other medications you may be taken, again due to its high acid content. Before starting an apple cider vinegar regimen, consult your physician.
The high acid content in the vinegar can also cause damage to the teeth. In addition to only ingesting diluted vinegar, try drinking it through a straw to lower tooth enamel exposure.
It can also cause painful headaches because it allows the brain to release toxins. One of the ways our bodies expel toxins is through the skin. Because of this, acne and other skin irritations can occur due to this release of toxins.
Always speak with a medical professional or doctor before taking any supplements. Always read the product label for instructions and directions.
Taking Apple Cider Vinegar
As previously stated, apple cider vinegar should always be consumed diluted in water. It also does not taste very good, so many people recommend mixing in some honey for sweetness.
Many people have trouble with the taste of apple cider vinegar, even when diluted. Luckily, it makes a delicious ingredient in salad dressings. You can also mix it with a bit of oil for a delicious addition to any grinder.
There is no set dosage for taking apple cider vinegar. It completely depends on what you are taking it for. If you plan on taking it long term, a smaller amount may be warranted. Most health sites suggest mixing two teaspoons in eight ounces of water for daily consumption.
What to Look for in a Good Apple Cider Vinegar
Look for organic, raw vinegar and the vinegar that contains “the mother” in it. “The mother” refers to probiotics and enzymes that have excellent beneficial health properties.
Buy vinegar in a glass container, not plastic. This is because the chemicals in the plastic can leech into the vinegar increasing the incidence of nasty chemicals present.
